Creating your Story and Pitch

CREATING YOUR STORY AND PITCH.

New York, USA

7 November 2022

Every successful company, from Apple, to Disney, to McDonalds, has a pitch and a story. Some of them are very apparent, and may appear in big letters on the home page of the company's website, and some are more subliminal.

When creating your business’ irresistible pitch you need to focus on three things: What, how, and why.

  • What you do- What problem does your company or product solve
  • How you do it- The process that your company goes through when providing your consumers with the solution to their issue
  • Why- This may be the most important, but maybe the hardest to pinpoint. Why you are doing what you’re doing. What’s your purpose, call, and belief.

A successful pitch emulates the why aspect.

The goal of a pitch is to create a lasting and irresistible impression in a very short amount of time. It should answer the 3 questions above, and set your company apart.

Here are our 5 top tips for creating your company pitch:

  1. Pare it down to the essentials- This is not the time for lengthy stories about how as a child you always dreamt of doing what you’re doing. Your audience has a very short attention span and you only have limited time to captivate and inform them.
  2. Outline your business model.
  3. Keep your pitch short, sweet, and to the point.
  4. Practice your pitch on someone outside of your company- Find someone you trust will give you constructive feedback, and even someone who is not familiar with what your company does. This will give you a clear idea of how your pitch will come across to potential customers.
  5. Write the long version of your pitch. Pretend you have your audience’s attention for as long as they’ll let you talk. Now cut that down to the most important points, and continue editing and editing your pitch until you’re satisfied with it. After some introspection, you should be able to distill what your company does down into one simple sentence.

When it comes to your company’s story, you have a little more room to play around with. Instead of having your audience’s attention for one sentence, you might have 3-5 sentences. The goal of a storyline is to create an emotional connection with the audience. As humans we are emotional beings and we respond well to stories.

Here are our 5 top tips for creating your company story:

  1. Talk about yourself- Seriously, people love learning about the people behind the brand.
  2. Tell a real customer story- show your audience how their lives can look if they hire your company/purchase your product.
  3. Give details on where your numbers are coming from.
  4. Show your product- As opposed to the pitch, you can take time to teach your company about your product, how it works and what benefits they can get from it.
  5. Give your business or product a consistent brand identity throughout. Once you have your story, every piece of content that your company releases, should be coherent with the message. Now we are not saying that every piece of content should revolve around your story. However, it should give off the same vibe, tone of voice and feel to the audience. It is important that your marketing team are aware of this so that the content is consistent.
